Finding the right diffuser for your home or office can be frustrating. There are so many different types of diffusers, and the price ranges can really vary.
I know I went through several types of diffusers before I found the one right for us! Once you have the diffuser of your dreams, things start to get fun. If you’re still stuck evaluating the various types of diffusers, here’s the information that will help you reach your decision.
Finding Your Scent
Before we dive into diffusion methods, I wanted to take a moment to touch on finding “your” scent. Using the right scent is key to getting the most enjoyable use from essential oils.
The number of scents and blends out there are endless. How do you know if you have the best one? Trying them all out can be daunting. And isn’t it a bummer when you end up with something you hate? What a waste of time and money.
To find the right scent for you, start with researching the benefits of each scent. There are so many benefits that essential oils can lend to the mind, body and soul. Trust me, you’ll have a great time learning about all the great benefits of essential oils. It’s like diving down a rabbit hole!

Types of Diffusers
Getting the most out of your essential oils also means using the right diffusing method for you. Did you know there are several ways to use your essential oils? Beyond applying them topically, and sometimes inhaling or even consuming them (when safe), there are a lot of common diffusion methods. I use several, and they each have their own benefits.
What is a Nebulizer for Essential Oils?
This method doesn’t require any heat or water. A nebulizer works by using a compressor to push the essential oil upwards while atomizing it into tiny particles. It’s then released as a strongly concentrated mist. Although these are great because they don’t require much set-up, they can be a bit noisy and are a more expensive method of diffusing essential oils.
What are Evaporative Diffusers?
These diffusers use a fan to blow the essential oil through a filter and into the room. This isn’t a great option for light scents because this method will evaporate the oil and its fragrance quickly.
What are Heat Diffusers?
To get the oils to evaporate these diffusers use--you guessed it—heat. Not a lot of heat, though, as that would disrupt the purity of the oil compounds. Low levels of heat are enough to fill a room with a lovely scent. This is an economic diffusion choice.
What is an Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser?
While the transformation of water and other liquids into vapor usually requires heat, ultrasonic diffusers use an adiabatic process, which means a change in the state of the liquids can be accomplished without any heat at all. This is the most common method of diffusing essential oils. Ultrasonic diffusers (or humidifying diffusers) create a mist. They utilize electronic frequencies to cause a small disc under the liquid (usually water) to vibrate at a high speed. The ultrasonic vibration breaks the essential oil into tiny microparticles, dispersing the oil into the air. The tiny particles are easily absorbed by the lungs for a great therapeutic effect on the body and mind.
I like this diffuser because it fills a large area with beautiful, healing scents. It humidifies the air and only uses a small amount of oil. You’ll only need one to five drops! That means you get more for your money since your oils last longer.
The downside is the machine should be cleaned between using different scents. It isn’t hard to do, just another thing on the list. Cleaning instructions typically vary by and come with the diffusers.
What is an Oil Burner?
Using an oil burner (or oil warmer) is another way to diffuse the lovely aroma of essential oils and fragrance oils. You simply place a few drops of oil in the water on top and use a tea candle to create heat from the bottom. The low level of heat then diffuses the oil into the room. The area the scent fills is more limited, but it creates a soft, beautiful and romantic ambiance. Great for intimate gatherings.
Don’t use an oil burner if it’s going to be left unattended. Always be careful with candles around children and pets.
What is Aromatherapy Jewelry?
Aromatherapy jewelry is a fun, beautiful and functional way of using essential oils. You can put your oils in a piece of jewelry, keeping the scents close to you to enjoy and benefit from all day.
I use a necklace that holds an essential oil-soaked piece of felt, ball or lava rock. I use grapefruit for staving off hunger, peppermint for a mood lifter or just as a pleasant fragrance. I have seen bracelets and earrings too! These make great gifts.
To sum it up, with all the types of diffusers out there, it’s important to do your research and see which one is right for your needs and budget.
